Hi, I'm Kenzie, the farmer and florist behind Petal Pond. I am an artist, the flowers are my medium, and the farm is where I grow my palette.
I began my farming journey almost a decade ago, starting with just a menagerie of animals and a failed veggie garden. My grandfather had been a big time hobby grower of dahlias in Sequim when I was growing up, so I tried my hand at growing them. Year one, the goats ate my plants before they could flower. Year two, I got maybe a flower or two before my partner accidentally weed-eated them down. Year three, I decided to plant over 300 to be sure that some would survive! They absolutely thrived, and I fell madly in love. I was pursuing completely different forms of art at the time, and found myself more and more abandoning the studio for the garden. Once I really dipped my toe into design and getting involved in the flower world, it was game over.
What nature can create is far more beautiful and whimsical than what I could ever sculpt or paint. Being able to combine these living palettes of vibrant color, incredible texture, and unexpected botanical elements is the most rewarding art form I could give my life to.
What began with a handful of blooms became an entirely new artistic medium—one that felt more alive and more beautiful than anything I could create with my own hands.
Today, my farm is my palette. I grow specialty flowers that can't be shipped or imported, collaborate with other local growers, and forage responsibly for the foliage and wild elements that make each design feel rooted in the Pacific Northwest.
I believe the most extraordinary flowers are the ones that belong to a particular place and moment. A flower carries the imprint of its season—the weather, the soil, the light, the challenges, and the abundance. It cannot be separated from the conditions that made it bloom.
That's what I want to bring to your wedding: not flowers that simply look beautiful, but a living, immersive experience that could only exist for you, in that place, in that fleeting moment.
I work with a small number of clients who value artistry over replication and are willing to give me the creative freedom to surprise them. Bring me your story, your feeling, your colors, your weird little details, your favorite painting or song. I'll bring the flowers.

FARM & FLORISTRY
At the heart of Petal Pond Farm is a pond, a big old barn, and a working farm that has been growing here since 1908. The original owners, the Flodin family, built the farm and went on to start Flodin Farm Supply, which eventually became the beloved Bay Hay and Feed. Our barn was once the hay storage facility for that business. Today, the farm looks a little different, but it is very much still a working farm—just one where specialty flowers, wetland habitat, ducks, geese, and a slightly unconventional approach to farming all share the same space.
The Farm
The pond is the heart of everything we do here. Much of the farm is wetland, which means working with this little microclimate requires some creativity about what and how we grow. We grow on a small scale, which gives us the freedom to seek out the unusual: fragrant Chocolate Cosmos, rare perennial flowers, special “unicorn” dahlias, ornamental cardoon, pitcher plants, and an ever-growing collection of plants chosen for their color, texture, movement, and fragrance. Many of these are things you simply can't find at a grocery store or local flower stand—and some aren't shippable at all.
We farm without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, compost our spent flowers, and are working toward eliminating landscape fabric and netting from the farm entirely. Our floral work is foam-free, too. We're also committed to restoring the habitat around our stream and doing our part to bring salmon home, with plans for native plantings that can support both the ecosystem and our floral work. Save the salmon, do the best we can, and make really beautiful flowers. That's pretty much the mission.
The Floristry
I came to flowers a little backwards. I wasn't raised dreaming about becoming a florist—in fact, I was pretty much flower-blind growing up. I was an artist first. I've spent years working in oil painting, sculpture, miniatures, photography, and stop-motion animation, and it wasn't until I planted my grandfather's beloved dahlias that I discovered flowers as an artistic medium. After growing more than 300 dahlias and becoming completely captivated, there was really no going back.
Flowers have become my favorite medium because they do something no painting or sculpture ever can: they are alive, changing, imperfect, and here for a fleeting moment. I bring that background in art and a farmer's knowledge of the seasons together to create floral work that is lush, unexpected, and deeply connected to the place it comes from. The farm grows the palette; floristry is where I get to make something with it.
